Animal lover Shannon Elizabeth has launched a conservation foundation in South Africa.

She says the Shannon Elizabeth Foundation (SEF) will focus on Africa's poaching crisis.

Speaking to IOL, the 'American Pie' star, who started dog and cat charity rescue, Animal Avengers, in LA in 2001, says now spends a lot of time in SA to work on the foundation's projects.

"As I became more and more aware of the poaching crisis in Africa, I wanted to see for myself and see how I could help stop it. So much of my work is here but I also fell in love with South Africa so I now live here for much of the time," she told the publication.

The 'Scary Movie' actress says she has partnered with Cape Town conservationist and writer, Peter Borchert, who will assist with the organisation’s  Wildlife Review Initiative.

"Through its programme of grants, the Foundation also supports reputable organisations such as the Rhino Pride Foundation and Flying for Freedom SA. Lobbying for just and effective wildlife laws is a central thrust of the Foundation’s activities, while future goals include projects that champion responsible tourism and securing land to protect vital ecosystems," Shannon says on her foundation's website.

In June 2017, over 40lbs of rhino horn was confiscated during a bust at OR Tambo airport (Johannesburg South Africa). The horn was bound for Istanbul. Yesterday, a trafficker ditched 9 rhino horn in unclaimed baggage - clearly after they suspected they were being watched. This time the bust happened in Istanbul. Again, it’s further evidence of rhino trafficking between South Africa and Turkey although we’re not sure whether it ends up in Turkey or simply moves on to a third country though. The bravery and arrogance of syndicates to move horn like this through major airports seems to add fire to the suspicion that staff at Turkish Airlines are involved. Watching the investigation closely...

What better way to celebrate #worldrhinoday than being able to finally share with everyone what has been keeping me so busy the last while. I could not be more proud to officially launch the Shannon Elizabeth Foundation! I started Animal Avengers in 2001 and since then my love for protecting all animals has grown so much and taken me on an incredible adventure. Animal Avengers will never disappear and I cannot wait to really get to work in turning it into a dedicated youth education platform to inspire kids all over the world to become ambassadors and true Animal Avengers to save our wildlife and wild places. We will be launching other programs soon, the biggest one is dedicated to #rhino. I am privileged to be working with some of the biggest names in conservation right now and together we will be launching Rhino Review, an initiative that is dedicated to looking after our rhino and educating people all over the world so we can protect these gentle giants.
