Rhinos population under threat: Project Rhino

Project Rhino in KwaZulu Natal says the threat against our rhino population is still great.

Rhino pouchers

It comes as two more rhino were poached at the uMfolozi Game Reserve.

In a statement this weekend, Ezemvelo Wildlife said four armed poachers held up two guards before robbing them of a firearm and radio.

The poachers then went on to kill a female white rhino and a calf inside. removing one of the animal's horns.

Project Rhino spokesperson, Chris Galliers says poachers are becoming more aggressive.

"In the last couple of weeks we've seen some rhinos being poached that have already been dehorned. So, I think we're entering into an interesting phase where we as Project Rhino one of our programme is to support the  reserves in terms of dehorning and we need that support. It is helping but that is only a temporary solution," he said.

Ezemvelo says this year, 99 rhino have been poached so far in KZN.
