Investigation into possible Gauteng link in Limpopo exam leak
The Department of Basic Education is investigating a possible link between Gauteng and the leak of a Grade 12 Mathematics P2 question paper in Limpopo this week.
This comes after a student approached the department over the exam paper.
Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga addressed the media in Polokwane, saying someone from Gauteng allegedly sent the paper to a learner in Giyani asking him for help with answers.
"We've already alerted the MEC for Education in Gauteng to say from our preliminary investigations, the source comes from outside," says Motshekga.
Motshekga says, at this stage, the leakage is limited to a few learners in one school and a few from neighbouring schools.
"There was a copy of the question paper in different formats, but the questions were the same," confirms Motshekga.
The Minister admits that the department may not have adequately addressed security risks regarding the role modern technology plays in the distribution of leaked exam papers.
"The paper went through the tech room and that is the same thing that happened last year. When one learner has a paper, it spreads. It pains me to imagine that amongst us are one or two individuals who are bent on undoing the good work that has been done over the years in order to further their own selfish motives," says Motshekga.
