'Music icon' Mariah Carey honoured at theGrio Awards

Watch Patti Labelle and Jennifer Hudson honour Mariah Carey by singing some of her biggest hit songs.

Mariah Carey received the 'Music Icon Award' at theGrio Awards.   

The annual awards ceremony, which is in its second year, recognises "icons, leaders and legends who have impacted the Black community and culture". 

Mariah was honoured for her successful career as a singer and songwriter. Patti Labelle and Jennifer Hudson paid tribute to the 54-year-old during Saturday's ceremony.

Jennifer performed Mariah's debut single, 'Vision of Love'. The song, which was released in 1990, won 'Best Female Pop Vocal Performance' at the 1991 Grammys. 

Jennifer's rendition received a standing ovation from Mariah and the audience.

Jennifer's performance also received a thumbs-up from social media users. 

"You did a great job Jennifer singing Mariah Carey hits. You can sing anything and still sound good too Congratulations to you Mariah Carey for so many years in the entertainment business," one X (Twitter) user wrote. 

Despite being a star in her own right, Jennifer is a huge Mariah fan. 

"It was another amazing year at  @theGrio Awards ! I had the honor of paying tribute to Mariah Carey as she received the Music Icon Award !! Congratulations, @MariahCarey, we love u!!!" the EGOT winner tweeted after the show. 

Patti LaBelle sang another song from Mariah's debut album. The 79-year-old brought the house down with her performance of 'Love Takes Time'.

Patti's powerful rendition received major praise online.

"Witnessing the Legendary Patti Labelle, Mariah's Godmother, honor her, seeing the joy on her face and the love she extends to everyone reciprocated back to her is so beautiful.  @mariahcarey you deserve to be celebrated with all the flowers in the world every day! We love you," an X user wrote. 

Several other celebrities were honoured at the ceremony. 

Denzel Washington, Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson, Kevin Heart, Misty Copeland, Don Cheadle, Steve Harvey, Eddie Murphy, and Tamron Hall also received awards.
