Missy Elliot named 2019 MTV VMA Video Vanguard Award recipient

Supa fly, supa dupa fly! Missy Elliot will receive the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award at this year's MTV VMAs.

Missy Elliot is receiving one of music's highest honours - 22 years after dropping her debut solo album, 'Supa Dupa Fly'. 

The 48-year-old has been named as the 2019 recipient of the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award.

The award will be presented at the MTV Video Music Awards.

The announcement comes just seven months after Missy became the first female hip-hop artist to be inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

She is also the first female rapper to win the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award. Missy's fans have been lobbying for years for her to get the award. 

She took to Twitter to thank them for their support throughout her music career. 

"I am Humbly Grateful to be receiving the MichaelJacksonVideoVanguard Award. I Thank my FANS “Supafriends” who fought diligently to see this day come @KidFury@crissles who rooted for years 4 me. I am crying happy tears. Thank you God @MTV@vmas am SO HUMBLED," she tweeted.

Missy is also set to perform on the MTV VMAs stage for the first time in 16 years. The last time she performed at the awards show was in 2003 when she performed her hit single, 'Work It'.

The Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award has been awarded to Jennifer Lopez, Rihanna, Madonna, Janet Jackson, Pink, Beyonce, Justin Timberlake, and Britney Spears in the past. 

The 2019 MTV VMAs are taking place in Newark, New Jersey on August 26. 

This year's performers include Lil Nas X, Camila Cabello, Shawn Mendes, and Taylor Swift.
