The nominees for the 2022 Black Entertainment Television (BET) Awards were announced this week and noticeably absent from the list was American rapper, Lil Nas X.

The 23-year-old did not receive a nomination last year either.

"Thank you, BET Awards. An outstanding zero nominations again. Black excellence!” he wrote in a tweet that has since been deleted.

One Twitter user asked the musician what he had actually done to deserve a nomination.

Lil Nas X clapped back saying that he had the "three biggest songs of last year". He released hits such as 'Montero (Call Me by Your Name)', 'That's What I Want', and 'Industry Baby' in 2021.

"I just feel like black gay ppl have to fight to be seen in this world and even when we make it to the top ifs try to pretend we are invisible," he wrote in a separate tweet.

Many social media users also questioned why Lil Nas X was not nominated.

"BET Awards didn’t nominate Lil Nas X but know who they did nominate? Jack Harlow," one Twitter user remarked.

Some Twitter users went as far as calling BET "homophobic".

"There’s literally no excuse on why Lil Nas X didn’t get a pop nomination from BET other than homophobia," one man tweeted.

Doja Cat leads this year's nominations. The 'Get Into It' hitmaker is up for six awards. Canadian rapper, Drake, and American singer, Ari Lennox, received four nominations each.

Kanye West, Mary J Blige, H.E.R., Jazmine Sullivan, Chris Brown, and The Weeknd also received nods.

The BET Awards are taking place on June 26 at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.
