An American court has temporarily dismissed a copyright infringement lawsuit brought against Dua Lipa

Reggae band, Artikal Sound System, sued the 27-year-old over her 2020 song, 'Levitating'. They claimed the hit single ripped off their 2017 track, 'Live Your Life'.

U.S. District Judge Sunshine found that the band did not provide evidence that the writers of Dua's song had access to their single - as previously claimed.

“These attenuated links, which bear little connection to either of the two musical compositions at issue here, also do not suggest a reasonable likelihood that defendants actually encountered plaintiffs’ song,” Billboard quoted the judge as saying.

However, Artikal Sound System will be able to refile the case again with supporting evidence. They have until June 16 to do so.

It's not the only copyright lawsuit Dua Lipa is facing over her song.

Songwriters L. Russell Brown and Sandy Linzer accused the singer of ripping off the melodies of two of their disco songs - 1980's 'Don Diablo' and 1979's 'Wiggle And Giggle All Night'.

They wrote the singles for Miguel Bosé and Cory Daye.

The songwriters claim the opening melody in Dua's song duplicated melodies featured in their songs.

Fellow British singer, Ed Sheeran, faced a copyright lawsuit of his own in 2023. He was accused of plagiarising Marvin Gaye's 1973 song, 'Let's Get It On'

Kathryn Griffin Townsend - the daughter of one of the song's writers - claimed that Ed copied the chord progression in his track, 'Thinking Out Loud'.

He was facing a $100-million (R1.8-billion) lawsuit. Ed won the case in May after a seven-person jury cleared him of plagiarism.

"I’m just a guy with a guitar who loves writing music for people to enjoy. I am not and will not allow myself to be a piggy bank for anyone to shake," he said outside of the courtroom.

Katy Perry also scored a victory in a copyright claim over her song, 'Dark Horse'. Gospel rapper Marcus Gray, who goes by the stage name Flame, accused her of copying his 2009 song, 'Joyful Noise'.

He was originally awarded $2.7-million in 2019 in the case, but the judgment was later overturned with an appeals court putting the lawsuit to bed once and for all in 2022.
