Bird lovers getting a head start on their 2022 travel plans should add the Drakensberg to their list.

South Africa’s rich and diverse birdlife has birdwatchers from all over the world flocking to the country to get a glimpse of the many species recorded in the region.

The Drakensberg in KwaZulu-Natal is a birdwatcher’s paradise. The area has hundreds bird species, including majestic birds of prey.

According to Ezemvelo KZNWild, more than 30 of the species found in the Drakensberg are endemic to Southern Africa.

The Drakensberg’s mountain ranges and grasslands are perfect for birding habitats.

Some of the birds that have made the Drakensberg their home include raptors such as bearded vultures, black eagles, and the jackal buzzard.

Other birds to look out for include the Drakensberg rockjumper, Cape vulture, and the violet-backed starling.

Do some research before visiting specific areas in the region to learn more about what birds you are likely to sea and during which seasons.

Nature and game reserves have guided birdwatching tours to help visitors spot the best birds the area has to offer.
