The Durban Botanic Gardens is one of KwaZulu-Natal’s top tourist attractions.

Africa's oldest surviving botanic garden is a favourite with nature lovers and locals just looking for an escape from the busy city life.

One of the best ways to enjoy a day at the Durban Botanic Gardens is with a picnic.

Listen to the birds chirping while you enjoy a delicious meal with loved ones.

“Families are encouraged to bring picnic baskets, blankets and camp chairs, and relax on the lawns or under a majestic tree. All areas are accessible for picnics unless they are reserved for a specific event,” Durban Botanic Gardens says on its website.

Groups of up to 20 people can enjoy an informal picnic, which makes the garden a great spot for a small gathering with friends and family.

Many visitors have been spotted having breakfast picnics or small birthday picnics.

Professional décor picnic setups and larger gatherings need to be approved and booked through the Gardens Information Office.

Visitors are allowed to bring a single foldup table and 10 chairs for a picnic, but wooden pallets are not allowed.

Durban Botanic Gardens officials say this is because they contain the Shot Hole Borer. It’s a type of insect that kills trees.

Gazebos, balloons, bunting, children’s play equipment, and confetti are also not allowed.

Visitors are urged to clean up after themselves and leave the gardens as they found them.

When you are done with your picnic, you can explore the surroundings.

The Durban Botanic Gardens Education Office offers group tours and themed walks.

Visit the gardens’ website for details about upcoming events. The Durban Botanic Gardens Trail of Lights is currently underway.

It is expected to run until January 2.

If you have family and friends coming into town for the holidays, these accommodation venues are close to the gardens:

The Quarters Hotel Florida
The Benjamin

They can also grab a bite to eat at these restaurants:
