What did you search most on Google this year? SASSA and the R350 grant top the list!

Every year, Google releases the results of the top searches in the world and varying countries. In South Africa, the most searched topics have always ranged from politicians and top celebs to prominent deaths and music trends. 

This year the top search indicated how the economic situation in the country is looking for millions of South Africans.

Google released the annual list of most searched for terms for 2021 and the South African Social Security Agency and the R350 grant came out at the top of the list.

If we rewind, the unemployment grant was introduced in April 2020 as a measure by the government to support citizens in need and those who may have lost sources of income as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and the lockdowns.

Another thing that people Googled the most was the question: 'What is happening in South Africa?' Mind-blowing, right?

That makes sense with the multiple deaths when COVID-19 cases were peaking, local government elections, KZN unrest, and petrol hikes among some others. 

Not surprising, but other top searches this year include the COVID-19 vaccine, the deaths of popular actor and director Shona Ferguson, as well as the local government election results and Squid Game and Skeem Saam.
