South Africa reports 155 new coronavirus cases

The number of confirmed cases in South Africa now stands at 709 - a significant jump from yesterday's 554.

The Health Minister revealed the startling statistic during an interview with the SABC on Wednesday morning. 


Zweli Mkhize says the largest number of scattered cases are in Johannesburg.

He says a church in the Free State that held an event lasting several days, is becoming the epicentre for cases in that province. 


A group of international guests, who attended the prayer breakfast, had tested positive for COVID-19. 


We are just 39 hours away from a national lockdown. 


From midnight tomorrow, every person - who isn't an essential service worker - must stay at home for 21 days.  


The Health Ministry had said earlier that the number of cases is likely to spike - as we're still in the early stages of the outbreak.
