Police ramp up roadblocks in PMB following complaints of residents flouting lockdown rules
Updated | By Steve Bhengu
KZN Police Commissioner Khombinkosi Jula says there's been an influx of complaints about people disregarding the lockdown regulations in Pietermaritzburg and surrounds.
He was in Edendale on Thursday where he joined officers at a roadblock.
He says they searched over 800 cars and arrested people for possession of illicit cigarettes and for having no permit or a valid reason to be on the roads.
"We have been receiving some complaints that there are individuals who are still going on as if it is business as usual."
"Taking into account that the Umgungundlovu District is the third-highest area in terms of infections. You have eThekwini; then Ilembe, this is the third-highest area in the province."
Jula says since the beginning of the lockdown there have been around 18 000 arrests at roadblocks in the province.
