A young Ladysmith mother is in police custody on suspicion of killing her baby by setting the infant on fire.
KwaZulu-Natal police say the 19-year-old woman had initially claimed the 10-month-old child had gone missing.
Spokesperson, Nqobile Gwala says she confessed to the crime while being questioned.
She says the baby's body was found hidden inside a mielie bag.
"She appeared yesterday in the Ladysmith Magistrate's Court and was remanded in custody until 20 May for a formal bail application," says Gwala.
There's another murder investigation in the north of Durban - after two people were found dead on the side of the road in Verulam.
It's believed they killed in a mob justice incident after they were accused of a spate of break-ins in the Mhlasini area.
