Updated | By Gcinokuhle Malinga
Correctional Services says more than 2 000
prisoners have been released on parole this past month.

The department is trying to reduce overcrowding to stem the spread of COVID-19 at correctional facilities. 586 inmates were approved for parole in KZN.
Spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo says another 19 000 parolees will be released over the coming few days.
"We are prepared and constantly reviewing the release of inmates and also checking where they are going to be released to so that they are not stigmatized and that they have made necessary representations before the parole board", he said.

"So the numbers of released inmates will increase over the next coming weeks and our officials will be monitoring them to ensure they comply with parole conditions", Nxumalo said.
