COSAS threatens to shut all schools over COVID-19
Updated | By Nomfundo Ngcobo
The national Congress of South African Students says learners must not return to school on Monday until mass testing is conducted.
Since schools re-opened last Monday for grade 7s and 12s five schools in KZN have closed after cases of teachers testing positive for the virus emerged.
COSAS General Treasurer, Michael Mayalo, says they are calling on all schools to shut down or they will be forced to physically close down all schools come Monday.
"As COSAS we are taking this step because we have seen how many learners have tested positive, which is a lot", he said.
"Parliament and the likes are being conducted virtually via Zoom so why are learners still being used as guinea pigs", Mayalo said
He says it is unfortunate that the education fraternity is undermined, placing scholars lives in danger.
"When a learner tests positive for the virus they are simply told to go isolate but when someone tests positive at a clinic or police station that particular entity is shut down, so therefore learners are being undermined by the process", he said.
