KZN records first infant to succumb to COVID-19 complications

The KwaZulu-Natal Health Department says the province has experienced its first coronavirus-related paediatric death after a five-month-old baby succumbed to COVID-19 complications.

According to a statement from KZN Health Department, the baby was admitted to Addington Hospital with tuberculosis, this week. 

"KwaZulu-Natal recorded its first paediatric death since the beginning of the pandemic. The deceased is a 5 months old who was admitted with tuberculosis," the statement read.

Meanwhile, officials say there were 789 new cases of the virus between Sunday and Monday in KZN, adding that the province contributed only 9% of the new cases reported nationally.

The province continues to experience an upsurge of cases with Ethekwini and UMgungundlovu Districts recording 60% of the daily cases.
