COVID-19 infections in South Africa surpass 200 000

The total number of COVID-19 infections has surpassed the 200 000 mark, almost four months after South Africans were first alerted about a coronavirus.

The total number of positive cases now stands at 205 721.
The latest figures also show that Gauteng province is less than 5 000 cases behind the Western Cape, with fears mounting that the country’s economic heartland may become the epi-centre in the coming days.

The Western Cape stands at 70 938 total infections, while Gauteng is at 66 891.
A further 111 deaths have been reported - with Gauteng recording 50 deaths, the Western Cape 35, in Limpopo there have been 17 deaths and nine from the Eastern Cape.
The country’s recovery rate has not changed and remains below 50%.
