KZN education dept. clarifies faux pas over number of 0% pass schools

The KZN Department of Education says seven schools in the province recorded a 0% matric pass rate in 2016 - and not nine as was initially announced yesterday.

Education MEC Mthandeni Dlungwane addressed the province's top achievers at the Durban ICC, yesterday.

He said it was with a "deep sense of embarrassment, disappointment and disbelief" that in 2016 - the province had nine schools that obtained a 0% pass rate.

However, Acting Deputy Director General for Examinations, Assessments and Curriculum in the province, Barney Mthembu, says the system reflects seven schools. The number decreased from 12 in 2015.

Speaking to Newswatch, Mthembu said the error probably arose in the MEC's speech.

"It shows one school in uMgungundlovu district, one school in the Zululand district, one in King Cetshwayo district, one school in aMajuba district, and three schools in iLembe district. I don't see any more schools - I think that was just an error in the person who was writing the report," he said.
