KZN Education department explains inclusion of progressed learners

The KZN Education Department has given further details about the inclusion of progressed learners among the number of pupils who passed matric in 2016.
Progressed learners are pupils who failed Grade 11 for two consecutive years, and were then automatically promoted to matric.
KwaZulu-Natal recorded the highest number of progressed learners in 2016 - at 27 033.

The national pass rate for 2016 increased to 72.5% - exceeding last year's rate of 70.7% when including the results of the progressed pupils.
Speaking at a ceremony at the Durban ICC to honour the province's top Grade 12 achievers - the Education Department's HOD, Vusumuzi Nzama, says even progressed learners have certain criteria they are required to meet.
