KZN 2016 matric results by the numbers

The results are out, and KZN has fared significantly better in the 2016 National Senior Certificate exams - compared to previous years.

The province's overall pass rate of 69.5% in 2016, is an improvement on the 60.7% achieved in 2015.


KZN MEC for Education, Mthandeni Dlungwane, made the announcement at an awards ceremony to recognize the achievements of the province's matric top achievers, at the Durban ICC this morning.


Dlungwane commended the class of 2016 for achieving good results, but said more had to be done to ensure that the province performed better in forthcoming examinations. 


KZN was one of the three worst-performing provinces in the 2016 NSC examinations - ahead of the Eastern Cape and Limpopo.

Dlungwane said his department still had "fresh memories"of KZN's unsatisfactory results in the 2014 and 2015 NSC exams, but that they would be implementing drastic measures to address the current education shortfalls at secondary school level.

The KZN matric results are as follows:


147648 full-time learners sat for the 2016 NSC exams;

27033 progressed learners in KZN - the highest in the country;

Nine schools achieved a 0% pass rate in 2016 – down from 14 in 2015;

215 schools achieved less than 30% pass rate overall;

The physical science pass rate increased from 51.81% in 2015, to 57.7% in 2016;

The mathematics pass rate increased from 33.32% in 2015, to 37.91% in 2016;

36139 candidates achieved a Bachelor pass – the highest in the country;

A total of 98028 learners passed the 2016 NSC exams in KZN - out of 147646 learners who wrote;

iLembe was the worst-performing district - achieving a 52.42% pass rate. The Majuba district performed the best in KZN, with a 77.4% pass rate. This is an 18.4% increase from 2015.
