As outgoing US president Barack Obama's tenure draws to a close, Americans have taken to Twitter to bid him farewell, and reminisce about his eight years in office. #ThankObamaIn4Words has been trending on the social media site since Wednesday - with the current POTUS receiving both well-wishes and stinging criticisms from the American public.

Obama will leave the White House in January 2017, following Donald Trump's inauguration as the new president of the US.

Twitter users have been divided on Obama's rule. Some have praised his leadership; others have expressed anger and disgust at some of his qualities.

Thousands of Americans thanked Obama for providing them with a sense of safety, while others commended some of his forward-thinking reforms - especially regarding LGBT rights.

Others have been less than complimentary.

Obama will also be fondly remembered for his wit and humour.

While these people seem happy to see him leave.

Even some South Africans have got on-board with the trend.

And then there were those for whom four words wasn't enough to express their gratitude for the Harvard-educated leader.
