Six top tips for buying a used car

The AutoTrader team has shared this expert advice on how you should go about buying a car, including how to get a vehicle check report as well as cross referencing the price.

1. Buy a Vehicle Check report

It will tell you whether the car is:
- Recorded as stolen
- Written-off
- Subject to outstanding finance

It can also unearth mileage discrepancies and confirm registration details, the number of owners and the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) allowing you to confirm these with the seller and the vehicle’s paperwork.

How AutoTrader can help: Buy a vehicle check report on vehiclecheck.co.za for only R92

2. Visit the seller

It’s really important you physically check the vehicle and see the documentation. Never buy a vehicle without seeing or driving it first, preferably in daylight when it’s easier to spot damage.

Taking a vehicle for a test drive can tell you a lot about the performance and handling.

- View the vehicle at the seller’s home and check the address is the same as the one listed on the Natis document or Road Worthy Certificate
- Check the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is the same as that on the Natis document or Road Worthy Certificate. This number is commonly found on the chassis or on the windscreen.
- Never carry cash when going to view the vehicle.

3. Price

Always check the vehicle’s market value by comparing the price with other similar models advertised on AutoTrader.co.za. If it’s being offered at a much cheaper price, ask yourself why. If it looks too good to be true, it probably is.

How AutoTrader can help:
Use our What’s it Worth tool on our site to compare current values of similar cars

4. Paperwork

You must see the original Natis document, service history and Roadworthy certificates before handing over any money. Ensure all documents are the originals and not photocopies

5. Contact details

Is the content of emails received from buyers suspicious? Be aware of emails which contain incorrect spelling, punctuation or grammar or requests for your personal information – it could be a scam. Ensure the seller has a telephone number listed.

6. Payment

Never send money abroad. Pay for the vehicle when you physically collect it from the seller.
