Our fashion expert Brett Robson takes us through how to find the perfect shade of red lipstick.

I am a huge fan of red lipstick! What started as the perfect colour lips for my Halloween costume in 2011 has turned into one of my signature make-up looks. I often go for the bold red lip (my favourite shade is Alarm by Rimmel)  and simple eye make-up.

I’m going to help you find the right shade for your very own perfectly painted red mouth, because let’s face it ladies – we all deserve to have a red pout!  And here’s how.

For fair skin tones

For pale/fair skin, reds that are brighter with a hint of blue are best. These shades of red that have blue undertones make for a fantastic “Old Hollywood glam " look that is beautiful on the fairer-skinned woman. But in all honestly, I think most shades suit fair skinned women.

Confused about which colors have blue undertones? Imagine a color spectrum with orange on one side and dark purple on the other. If a red lipstick looks closer to orange in color than purple, then it has orange undertones. If the red is closer to purple in color, then it has blue undertones.

What’s also important is that reds with a hint of blue will make your teeth look whiter.

For medium skin tones

Bright and fierce orange reds look best on olive skin tones. Although I do believe that any shade of red can look gorgeous on medium skin tones, I prefer reds with a hint of pink.

Reds with pink draw more light to the face, while wine-reds will make skin look more sun-kissed. I am a medium skin tone. I tend to go with my mood or the look I am trying to achieve. At night I tend to go for the wine-reds and during the day the brighter, pink shades of red.

For dark skin tones

For dark skin, orange-reds and reds that are a bit deeper, with some burgundy, work best. I love burgundy, and as you may have seen my burgundy colour trend alert, you should be wearing this colour. It gives a more modern and sultry look.
