Wind, rain and blistering cold can do some serious damage to our hair. As the temperatures drop outdoors, we crank up the heat indoors which also leads to dryness and brittleness.

Hair can accumulate static electricity and even become brittle during the winter months. If you don’t have a well balanced diet or use not-so-gentle products on your hair it doesn’t take much for the cold and dry weather to damage it. Preventative measures can ensure that your hair stays healthy and hydrated during the winter months.

Here are a few tips to help protect your locks and keep them smooth and healthy this winter:

Get regular hair trims: If you want to keep your hair looking great through the winter, you’ve got to start early. Get regular trims, and use a deep conditioning treatment. This will help make your hair healthy to begin with and stop winter damage before the season starts.

Alternate conditioners: In addition to special treatments, it will help to change your daily hair care routine as well.  During winter, try alternating your regular conditioner with an extra moisturizing one or even a leave-in conditioner. I love the Moroccan Oil Restorative Hair Mask.

Cover it up: Wear a hat or scarf when out in the cold. With millions to choose from, winter is a good time to experiment with different looks and get festive while protecting your hair at the same time. I have decided beanies are going to be my “thing” this winter! What’s yours?

Use a serum: Serums smooth your hair and can also create a protective layer against harsh cold weather or indoor heat. This is one I think is worth investing a little more in. Use it when your hair is wet before you blow-dry to make your hair shiny, or dab it on when it’s dry to keep fly-aways down. I religiously use the GHD Smooth & Finish Serum. A more affordable option is the KAIR range of serums available at Clicks.

Always use a heat protector: Never use heat on your hair without applying a heat protector prior to doing so. This should actually be done at all times, not just during the winter. Try the GHD Heat Protect Spray, I have tried a few, but this is my absolute favourite.

Drink plenty of water: Just like your skin, your hair gets its moisture from your body. That means that if you want to keep your hair hydrated, you have to keep yourself hydrated by drinking plenty of water.

Don’t forget your scalp: Most people forget about their scalp, but during the winter it’s important to keep your scalp moisturized. Be sure to use products that moisturize the skin and hair on your head.

While it may take a bit of extra work, you can keep your hair moisturized and looking beautiful all year round.

Hope this helps keep you looking fab!
Xx
