You don't eat meat? Really? Why? These are just a few of the questions meat eaters constantly ask vegetarians.

Being a vegetarian isn’t just about eating carrots, frying tofu and boiling peas.

Vegetarian food can be just as delicious and mouth-watering as meat dishes. You can sneak vegetarian meals onto your family’s dinner plates and they’ll be none the wiser.

Not convinced? Then you need to get your hands on Fry's Family Indian Cuisine Cook Book: Volume One.

The Fry’s family teamed up with MasterChef SA winner Deena Naidoo to select recipes from the thousands sent in by vegetarians in SA. The result is uniquely South African dishes with a whole lot of flavour.

We tried the Spicy Sweet and Sour Chicken-Style Chutney. The dish was fairly easy to make and all the ingredients, including the spices, can be found in your local supermarket. The chicken-style strips are fried until golden brown, just the way we love them, and then added to a sweet and sour chutney. The apricot jam helped tone down the spices, but if you can’t handle the heat try leaving the chilli powder out or adding very little, like we did. This dish had us coming back for seconds. It can be served with rice or roti. It’s also easy to make and took us less than 30-minutes to put together.

Next we tried the Peri-Peri Pizza. Who doesn’t love pizza? This is the perfect dish for a lazy Friday evening when you just want to throw something together without any fuss. Your family will love it and you’ll be in and out of the kitchen in no time. The key ingredient in this dish is Fry’s Traditional sausages. As the name suggests it is indeed very hot. Go easy on the green chillies and peri peri sauce for a milder version. All the ingredients are topped on a readymade pizza base. We weren’t sure about one ingredient though; the baked beans. It’s not that we don’t love baked beans, it was just a bit weird having them on a pizza. Vegans can leave out the cheddar and mozzarella cheese. We’re cheese lovers so we piled it on in heaps.

The book is filled with a variety of dishes that are all well put together. With 36 recipes to choose from, you’re bound to find many you will like. Some recipes only require seven ingredients; the puri patha dish only has three steps. Other dishes to look out for are the No Fish Curry with Butternut and Almond Bites, Meat Free Butter Chicken-Style and the Butternut and Sweet Potato Salad with Thick Cut Chunky Strips. These recipes are so good, your family will even forget that fried chicken ever existed – erm, maybe just for a few hours.
