Station highlights from 2013

2013 has been an adventure filled, busy and rewarding year for East Coast Radio. Thank you for supporting our campaigns and events and helping us make some treasured memories!

Here are our station highlights from 2013, in no particular order.

The Discovery East Coast Radio Big Walk

Nearly 35 000 people took part in The Discovery East Coast Radio Big Walk in Durban on May 26. It was our biggest Big Walk ever!

A sea of yellow and white T-shirts stretched from uShaka Marine World, along the revamped Golden Mile, to Moses Mabhida Stadium - and the weather played its part as well.

Re-live the experience by taking a virtual tour of the day here, and take a look at a gallery of photos here

Knowledge Box

We launched a new outreach initiative called Knowledge Box this year, because we believe that key to building a better life for all South Africans is a better education.

Together with your help, we donated mobile book units to four KZN schools that don’t have libraries. The red and yellow boxes on wheels contain 300 books, prescribed by the Department of Education.

We’d like to thank everyone who opened their hearts and wallets to Knowledge Box. See photos of the Knowledge Box launch here

Durban Day

East Coasters turned out in their numbers to see eight of the country’s top acts perform at Durban Day on Sunday, September 8, at People’s Park. What a day!

Zakes Bantwini, Toya Delazy, Mango Groove, Lira, Prime Circle, Mi Casa, Goldfish and our #BeTheBand winners, The Kickstands, were on fire - and kept everyone partying hard until late. See the photos here

Flip Flop Friday

Your Flip Flops…wear them on Friday! KZN heeded our call to wear flip flops to work or school on Friday 20 September.

Twitter was flooded with people exposing their toes, tweeting their feet...and generally having an awesome #FlipFlopFriday.

Flip Flop Friday was started two years ago as a celebration of provincial pride during Heritage Month, and we think we showed the rest of SA some serious funsunzi KZN spirit! See the photos here.

Toy Story

Thanks to the help of the people of KZN, East Coast Radio’s Toy Story with Game has managed to make a difference in the lives of many children in our province. This year, 38 000 toys were collected, while east coasters helped raise around R1.3-million which went towards buying food parcels.

Nearly 40 hours were spent on road trips as our teams visited hospitals around the province and the Red Cross Air Mercy Service helped deliver toys and food parcels to areas our wheels couldn’t take us. In total, children in 55 hospitals in KZN benefitted from our Toy Story 2013 campaign.

We’d like to convey our heartfelt thanks to each and every person in KZN who helped us help make a difference. You have brought a smile and even hope to thousands of children in our province. Thank you.

The Connecting Africa Project

The Connecting Africa 2013 Project, which we were involved with along with Tourism KZN and Dube TradePort, was officially launched in September. The project aims to increase the number of travellers between African countries and our province.

We hosted three radio stations from Pretoria, Lusaka and Harare who all broadcast back to their respective markets: a combined listenership of over 13-million people!

The project is designed to form close alliances with radio stations on our continent and build a community of broadcasters that will come together annually in Durban.

East Coast Tables: The Inland Edition

We launched our second recipe book East Coast Tables: The Inland Edition by Erica Platter and Clinton Friedman in June.

The sequel to our international award-winning East Coast Tables, it highlights food and ingredients from KwaZulu-Natal’s inland region - travelling through the Midlands right up to the Drakensberg.

This is not just any recipe book; the farm-to-plate documentary style book features contributions by local cooks and chefs, personal interviews and stunning location photography.  Read an interview with author Erica Platter here.

East Coast Tables: The Inland Edition is available from Exclusive Books. Included in the book is a recipe from our very own Darren Maule. Take a look at his ‘how to’ video guide for his Impossible Tart below.

Bring on 2014!
