Our pick for the weekend

It's another busy weekend here on the East Coast. Between documentary film screenings, the Discovery East Coast Radio Big Walk and Jack Parow, come Sunday afternoon we’ll all need some serious couch time.

It looks like it’s going to be another busy weekend here on the East Coast. Between documentary film screenings, the Discovery East Coast Radio Big Walk and Jack Parow, come Sunday afternoon we’ll all need some serious couch time.

Hori Smoku @ Upstairs

The gorgeous space Upstairs is above Spiga D’Ora in Florida Road. It’s played to host to some incredible artsy events in its time and this Friday 24 May is no exception. You definitely want to head through to catch the screening of Hori Smoku. It’s a feature length documentary exploring the roots of American tattooing through the life of its most iconoclastic figure, Norman "Sailor Jerry" Collins.

Considered by many the foremost tattoo artist of all time, Collins is the father of modern day tattooing, whose uncompromising lifestyle and larger than life persona made him an American legend.

Through rare interviews, photographs and hours of archival footage, Hori Smoku Sailor Jerry: The Life and Times of Norman Keith Collins, explores the past, present and future of the global tattooing phenomenon.

The coolest bit is, entrance is free! Be there around 7pm. For more info mail [email protected] or join the Facebook Group

Jack Parow @ Live – The Venue

Never has the South African youth been so in love with an Afrikaans boy from the suburbs who drives a shot out VW and has a penchant for thug life. Jack Parow is a cultural super star and us Durbanites get to hang out with him and watch his jam at Live -The Venue this Friday 24 May for R100. Unfortunately it's an over 18s jol so no school kids. Get there around 8pm and get ready for an opskop julle!

Wonder Market

If you're not Big Walking, there's nothing like a bit of a craft market stroll with a food stand brekkie on a Sunday morning. This Sunday 26 May head to the Chris Saunders Park in Umhlanga to support our local creative and craft talent. There are loads of young ladies’ wear designers trading as well as awesome home décor stands. There’s vintage furniture, revamped goods and general items of coolness on show. It’s the perfect way to end off a weekend. Happy strolling.
