Durban traffic fine con details

We have an alert today about a man who poses as a traffic cop calling you about unpaid fines, and promising a good deal if you go via him.

Dawn from Durban says she received a call last Wednesday morning supposedly from Sgt Swanerpoel from the Metro Police. He claimed that she had 3 outstanding speeding fines that hadn't been paid. To avoid going  to court he would assist her. He had the details of where the fines were issued, and said if she agreed there and then to pay the full amount given, he would make sure she didn't have to appear in court. This impostor policeman asked Dawn to call him back on his cell number and she played along. He then offered quite a big discount, but said she'd need to pay via Checkers Money Market immediately, then call her with the reference number and he'd write off the balance.  She told him she knew it was a scam and hung up. Dawn then called Metro police and they didn't know a Sgt Swanepoel. They suggest she call the fine depart and quote her ID number and see if there were any outstanding fines to her name and of course there weren't. One thing that worries Dawn is this guy had her cell number, her car registration and colour.

Business break-in update

On the business break-in front, the latest is that the areas apparently being targeted are Morningside, Overport  & Umgeni with Lillian Ngoyi Road among the worst affected. Computers, laptops, cash, even cash registers are among the items taken. Some of the suspects gained entry by derailing the driveway gate. Please secure both your premises and your valuables, and make sure you back up your computers to the cloud.

Communities rallying against crime

Finally, the next meeting of the Woodhurst Sub-Forum is Wednesday night at 7pm at the Woodhurst Multi-Cultural Centre before the Library. All residents of Woodhurst are invited to attend.
