Durban online job scam alert
Updated | By Diane Macpherson
Please beware of job scams at this time of the year into the new year. Remember the rule, you should never have to pay a registration fee to get a job.
We've learnt about a really suspicious-sounding online advert calling for bank tellers in Durban. Once you submit your CV you're told by the agency supposedly doing the recruitment that you need to pay a R1500 registration fee immediately, and that in order to be trained you need to pay another training fee of around R2000. Please do not pay under these circumstances. This sounds totally bogus.
If you're making last-minute holiday plans, beware of fraudsters who create high-quality websites for fake travel agencies, offering too-good-to-be-true deals. Hundreds of would-be tourists are convinced to pay on the spot, scammers then collect the money, shut down the website, create a new one and move on. There are protective measures you can take - for instance ensure the travel agency is a member of a professional body. Also, call the resort or hotel you intend to visit to confirm a relationship with the agency. If however you fall victim, report the matter to authorities immediately. Sadly though, it's more often than not difficult to get a refund.
