Computer theft syndicates hitting hard
Enforce is urging business owners to make sure their security is adequate to prevent break-ins for hi-tech equipment. It says these robberies continue to increase due to a growing demand for hi-tech equipment across South Africa’s borders. It says a syndicate would need to break into 20 homes to steal 20 computers or laptops, but in one business robbery they can fulfill that amount. The syndicates committing these robberies are highly organised and often scope out their targets beforehand. They work in groups of 5 to 7, hold up security guards at gunpoint, and quickly take what they are after, knowing they have a few minutes before armed response will arrive on scene. They are therefore not deterred by alarm systems. Enforce has urged business owners to invest in good quality CCTV systems with high mega pixel cameras and gated doors – not aluminum gates which are easy to bend with a crowbar or even screwdriver. CCTV cameras should be able to record clear images to allow easy identification, and therefore possible arrest, of those carrying out these crimes. Remote Video Verification is also advisable as it takes away a physical guard who can be overpowered by syndicates.
