Disaster teams on standby: Cogta

Disaster management teams have been placed on high alert as KZN braces itself for heavy rain and thunderstorms.

Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Department spokesperson, Msawakhe Mayisela says the western parts of the province, including Newcastle, Nquthu, Duversely affectedndee, Vryheid and Dumbe in Zululand are expected to be ad. 


Mayisela is also urging those in low-lying areas to be extra vigilant and to move to higher ground.

''We have in the past experienced unnecessary lose of lives in communities that are living near rivers. So we are just calling up on them to be on high alert and we are also calling up on our people planning to build their homes near rivers not to do so,'' he said. 


 Meanwhile, SAWS has forecast a severe thunderstorm and possibility of heavy rains over the north western and northern sections of the province.
