An Indian businessman has taken protecting himself against COVID-19 to the next level.

Shankar Kurhade from Pune, India paid just over R67,000 to produce a customised face mask made of pure gold.

The mask, which took eight days to craft, weighs approximately 60 grams.

Kurhade says he got the idea when he saw another story about a man who wore a mask made of silver and he took it as a challenge.

But some have questioned how he is able to breathe through the mask.

Speaking about the custom-design, Kurhude said that it has tiny breathable pores that let in air.

“It is a thin mask and has tiny pores that is helping me to breathe,” Kurhade said.

The 49-year old says the mask has gotten him a lot of attention when he is out and about.

“People are asking me for selfies,” he said. “They are awestruck when they see me wearing the gold mask in markets.”
