#EarthDay: Yes, sustainable fashion is a thing!

When we speak about #EarthDay, our thoughts immediately migrate to being kinder to the environment, right? Well, the truth is it's more than that - we should be looking at the clothes we wear, too...

On the 22nd of April 2021, we celebrated 51 years of honouring Earth Day.

The truth is that we tend to associate #EarthDay with all things green and being sustainable in the traditional sense, so taking care of the environment, our flora, and fauna, being carbon-friendly, encouraging the use of solar power, and moving away from the electric age.

However, it is our responsibility to look deeper than that. What about the clothes we wear? If you didn't know before, sustainable fashion is a thing and forms part of being a hero to the earth.

According to an article in Vogue Business, "A 2018 study found the apparel and footwear industry that year created more greenhouse gases than France, Germany, and the UK combined, creating a staggering 2.1 billion tonnes of CO2 emissions".

A report put together by Mckinsey & Co. showed material production producing the highest amount of emissions in comparison to industries like transport, retail, and fabric preparation.

Vogue Business added: "Changes made by brands and their suppliers could have a knock-on effect of encouraging sustainable consumer behaviours. Consumers can also take steps to reduce their emissions by reducing the washing and drying of clothes already in their wardrobes as well as mending or upcycling old clothes rather than discarding them.".

So, in retrospect, we can assist more than we take the time to acknowledge. We understand that life can get busy, but taking the easier way out isn't always the answer. If we want to conserve what we have and help heal the earth, then perhaps we should commit to taking a small step in the right direction and try not to run your washing cycle too often, upcycle your old clothes or if that's not possible, then donate them, and use the recycle bin as much as you can.
