Air NZ to ask passengers to weigh themselves before boarding

And here we thought we could get away with not hopping on a scale forever...

Going on a weight scale can be daunting for the fittest person, so can you imagine how it might feel for someone who isn't quite happy with their weight?

Well, if you are planning on travelling this month with Air New Zealand, then you might want to reconsider.

"The airline is looking for those travelling on its international network to take part in its passenger weight survey." (Instagram)

New Zealand's Civil Aviation Authority plans to start with the programme this month. It will run until July 2023.

They are hoping the passenger weight survey "will provide data on the weight load and distribution for Air New Zealand’s international flights", CNN Travel reported.

“We weigh everything that goes on the aircraft – from the cargo to the meals on board to the luggage in the hold,” Alastair James, the airline’s load control improvement specialist, was quoted as saying. (SCMP)

We can understand then how it makes sense to weigh the passengers as well. That will allow them to be more precise with their findings.

Besides being a priority as put forth by the Civil Aviation Authority, it is "an “essential” initiative to ensure “the safe and efficient operation of the aircraft”. (Instagram)

The big question for us is whether this is not infringing a passenger's right to personal information?

But according to the SCMP website, "the airline says weight records will be kept anonymous and out of sight".
