Do the Math Movie- how close are we to global environmental catastrophe?
Updated | By George Thorne
The time is now. We hold our future, and our kids future in the palm of our hands!
Bill McKibben is an environmental journalist and activist. He has written extensively about the environment and our impact on it. To date he has written over a dozen books, as well as hundreds of articles not to mention many, many interviews and campaigns.
He is also the founder of 350.org, which is grassroots movement, rising from the bottom up all over the world, uniting to create the solutions that will ensure a better future for all. Their online campaigns, grassroots organizing, and mass public actions bring together a global network active in over 188 countries.
They have now released a movie, Do the Math. It’s simple math: we can emit 565 more gigatons of carbon dioxide and stay below 2°C of warming — anything more than that risks catastrophe for life on earth. The only problem? Burning the fossil fuel that corporations now have in their reserves would result in emitting 2,795 gigatons of carbon dioxide — five times the safe amount
.
Fossil fuel companies are planning to burn it all — unless we rise up to stop them.
