When a celebrity dies, does the cause of death have to be made public?

Avicii's death shook the music industry, but shortly thereafter news about his mental state and previous health issues did the rounds. This got Damon thinking: in such a private family time, why is it anyone's business about the cause of death?

Most of us know exactly where we were and what we were doing when we learned of a beloved public figure passing, and then after the news breaks, social media pages are filled with videos and heartfelt posts about how deeply saddened we are by the loss.

After that comes the WHY when celebrities die. There seems to be this race to the finish line to see who can find out the answer first.

  • Prince
  • David Bowie
  • Amy Winehouse
  • Heath Ledger
  • Michael Jackson
Why is it even anyone's business and what is the need for human speculation? I cannot even begin to imagine what a terrible time the family is having, and now they have to divulge the news to entertain the world's craving for closure.

Instead of spending their time grieving, these families have to spend their time issuing press statements and to make matters worse, they even have to begin explaining themselves, especially in the case of death by suicide.

Ultimately, does the WHY even matter? Should we not instead be celebrating the grand lives they lived and the legacy they have left behind?
