We all know how rife hijackings are in South Africa and this time it’s happened right here in Durban.

According to a survey by Crime Stats, it was found that of all the various forms of crime, almost 10% of victims were involved in a hijacking. Yikes, that's terrifying!

News24 reported that a 38-year-old man has become the latest victim of a car hijacking, caught on camera in the Sherwood area.

I have been hijacked before, so I can relate to the fear and panic that sets in during a situation like this.

In the unfortunate event that you find yourself in a hijacking, Netstar has shared a few things you need to remember:

  • Don't be hostile or show attitude toward the hijackers. This would just irk them.
  • Don't switch off your calm. Remain calm.
  • Avoid eye contact - look down and hear what they have to say.
  • Show them that you don't have any weapons on you.
  • If you have passengers hiding in your car, let the hijackers know in a calm way so that they are not alarmed when they see them.
