The passing of Joseph Shabalala sent shockwaves through South Africa. Shabalala died last Tuesday morning at Life Eugene Marais Hospital in Tshwane at the age of 78.

Before his passing, Shabalala and his talented group, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, launched a Mobile Academy that aims to educate people on the history of Isicathamiya music. The academy also gives aspiring artists the chance to learn from the group and engage with their members.

The importance of this academy is not lost on KZN Premier Sihle Zikalala.

Zikalala said: "The issue of the academy is in our plan. We have started it in terms of planning and we are committed to ensuring we will have an academy that will preserve this genre, but also all African music. The issue of the academy is not shelved. It is a plan and it is necessary to ensure we preserve the legacy of Mr. Shabalala,”

The Premier also had major praise for Shabalala for flying the South African flag as high as he did.
