In the Zulu culture, the practice of paying lobola is basically the price of a bride, which is usually paid in the form of cattle. It is a practice deep-rooted in various African cultures.

It is usually the man's responsibility to pay the lobola for his future bride. Lobola is used to bring two families together through the act of marriage. Now you can understand why both my Producer and I were left a bit dumbfounded by the situation.
