Gender-neutral restrooms for University of Witwaterstrand
Updated | By Zaba
The University of Witwaterstrand is going to make some of
the loos on it’s campuses gender-neutral. Should all public restrooms have this
feature?
In an article published on TimesLive, the university told students that it was responding to calls for bathrooms that were inclusive for the people who defined themselves as transgender, the non-conforming, and those who were not comfortable with using gender-specific lavatories.
“We believe that gender-neutral bathrooms make a meaningful contribution to the university’s transformation agenda,” a spokesperson from the university was quoted saying.
Pura Mgolombane, of the Wits transformation office, said anyone who felt comfortable with using the bathrooms could do so and the university has already identified the loos that will be opened up and the signs will be changed soon.
Well, good on you, Wits. But let’s also hope the security gets a little tighter because I can’t help but think of creeps who will want to use these bathrooms as a front for sexual violence.
