Dye or no dye: What's the big deal about going grey?

'Why are so many of us obsessed with covering up our roots?' asks Damon Beard on Monday's Big Debate.

To dye or not to dye – that is the question?

Do people still dye their hair when they go grey? Well, if chatting with a friend of mine this past weekend is anything to go by, then it’s a big "yes"!

It’s not so much the guys who panic when their hair starts to go that salt and pepper shade – but more so the ladies, who, as far as I can make out, have been influenced by beauty standards dictating that as soon as there’s so much as a grey root showing, you grab 'the bottle'.

I mean, grey hair is symbolic with those in their golden years, right? Not for young, exciting go-getters like me? Okay, maybe not me, but maybe for my producer, Simon.

I did a quick whip around the office and it seems that they are dyeing their hair at the sight of a grey strand. I have a salt and pepper type of hair and I’ve never dyed my hair. So why should I start now? I embrace my roots as they are.

But it seems as though it’s a different story for the ladies. As one of the ‘over thirties’ said to me this morning:
"There’s a niggling voice in my head and from the mouths of some of my friends, telling me that I should dye my roots."

Isn’t it time we started being more open about our grey hair and our wrinkles because after all, they’re only natural? Or should we carry on covering up for as long as we possibly can?
