Durban-based gardener calls out employer for calling him 'boy'

A local gardener took to our WhatsApp line to express his outrage over the name that his employer chooses to call him. We caught up with him to find out more.

But there was one voice note that struck a nerve with us this week. It was sent in by a local gardener who chose to remain anonymous to protect his identity. 

He told us about how upset he was that his employer kept referring to him as 'boy'. He called him out on it, and the employer responded by saying that he didn't mean anything by it. Even after the confrontation, the employer continued to call him by that name, despite being asked not to. 

Due to the harsh economic climate, the gardener told us that he had fallen on hard times and could not afford to be out of a job.

"I don't want to lose my job, but I cannot handle being called that name. It's not right as I'm not a boy, I'm a man. I work hard for my money, but it's not fair that I am treated like this," he said.
