This past weekend our twins, Rocco and Lula, celebrated their 5th birthday. For me, throwing parties are my absolute best. It's my love language for sure.

The night before the party, we had a few friends over for an early dinner and as they were leaving, Mike called me into the kitchen and what I saw confused me, to say the least.

If you have ever had the joy of buying a cake for a birthday party, you will know that the cake comes housed in a pretty serious polystyrene box to protect it and keep it cool. However, this box of cake looked like it had been mauled by rats. Half the cake was eaten and had been scooped through the break in the box. My internal monologue was confused. I mean, how did a rat get into the fridge?!

We called all the kids into the kitchen, showed them the box, opened it and what was there was half a bar-one cake covered in pieces of the box - looking like a rat had chewed through it.

They all looked perplexed and said that they knew nothing about it. I then asked for the person who did it to come forward and it was then that our eldest, Cooper, said he had got his hands on the cake and was sorry.

He began crying and apologised for his actions. I said that it was his cross to bear and when the cake gets put on the table at the party, he must deal with that state of the cake. I knew the guilt was more of a punishment for him than anything else would be.

We said goodnight to the kids and stood outside the bedroom door. On weekends, they all sleep in one room, and we heard Lula (one of the twins) asking Cooper why he did it. It was then that the room went quiet and Rocco said in a small voice, 'guys, I was the one that broke the box and ate the cake, but didn't want to get into trouble', to which Cooper replied, 'I know Rocco, I took the fall for you so that you won't get in trouble'.

Mike and I stood stunned as we listened up. Oh, my glory! What a twist in the tale, right? At age 7, Cooper is taking responsibility for something he didn't do to shield his little brother. My heart could have burst at that point.

We went into the room, sat on the bed and unpacked the scenario a little further and acknowledged that the truth is always the way to go. Honesty is the best policy, right?
