#ThrowbackThursdayTunes: Four female musicians who take Jane back

Since it's the second last week of Women's Month, Jane decided to throw it back to these singers who are very special to her. How many of them can you relate to?

Can you believe that it's already nearly the end of August? I can't believe that time has flown by so quickly. Actually, where has 2017 gone to?

As mentioned previously, August is one of my most favourite months. During the month, we asked for women of KZN to submit their voice notes to nominate inspiring women in their lives and I was blown away by the response.

With that in mind and today being Thursday and #TTT day, I decided to shed some light on four of my favourite female singers of all time, and share a bit of a story about how I relate to each of their hits.

Alanis Morissette - Ironic

'Jagged Little Pill' was such an amazing album. I knew every single track off by heart in 1997. This album and song are laced with memories for me. Back in 2001, one of my dearest friends Sam and I, whilst living in Cape Town studying at Drama School, found ourselves as part of the stage crew for a one-woman show set to the soundtrack of the album. This took place at the Grahamstown Arts Festival. I was in charge of the spotlight and using a side panel of a Simba chip box and a piece of masking tape, I made a plan. What a fun experience!

Henry Ate - Hey Mister

This track, which was off the 1997 album 'Slap in the Face', was another awesome album. I remember watching them when they first started in a dark and dingy spot in Pietermaritzburg. Karma-Ann Swanepoel and her band rocked and it was the first time I'd seen a South African woman perform like she did. Listening to this song brings a boat load of memories to mind.

Billie Holiday - Summertime

I have loved this song for as long as I can remember. I simply just adore Billie Holiday. This American jazz musician has such a smooth and soulful voice and is someone that I turn to whenever I just need a bit of 'me time' away from the hustle and bustle of life. What makes this song even more special is that my cousin Fae, who is an opera singer in the UK, sang it at a special family gathering. There's simply nothing better than basking in good times and memories that have passed.

Gloria Gaynor - I Will Survive

Just recently I had my 20-year school reunion and we all stretched with laughter as we recollected how one year back in the mid 90s, we had to do a choreographed dance to this song as part of a school show. After a few glasses of wine, we took to the makeshift dance floor and would you believe it, I could do most of the moves! Ah, man! I love and miss the good old school days.

Do you have a throwback tune that you would like us to play on-air during the show? Well, take part in the #TTT feature by sending me a WhatsApp message with your name and the word 'TTT' to 061 792 9495.
