Should housewives be paid for housework?

While reading an interesting, debatable article this past weekend, one particular comment left by a reader confused Jane, so she decided to share her thoughts on the topic and the comment itself.

For every working woman out there who tries to juggle a career and a home life, some women have to make the conscious decision of being a stay-at-home wife.

In addition to taking care of the family and making sure they are fed, housewives have the job of cleaning up the home, shopping for groceries, and even cooking. Being a housewife is a mammoth job in itself. It takes a lot of time and dedication to be a housewife; hence the term "home executive" was coined for these remarkable women.

While trolling through the interwebs this past weekend, Jane came across an article published by China Daily which debated whether housewives should be paid a salary or not.

There were a host of comments on the article. Some insisting that they need to be paid for the hard work they put in to maintain a house, while others said that it is ridiculous that this was even up for debate.

But there was one particular comment which struck a nerve with Jane. It was posted by an anonymous user who said that being a housewife was not hard work and that it was crazy that they should be rewarded for it.

"To be honest, I think stay-at-home moms and home executives should be remunerated. Anyone that's tried to run a home knows what upkeep it takes," said Jane when asked about the matter at hand.

Jane, who also has to manage a home and juggle a job, went on to explain a typical busy morning.

"Just this morning I have already been to the grocery store, I picked up something for my daughter, dropped books off at the library, and even went to the butcher. Compensate me! It's hard work guys, and it's not fair that these important women don't get paid for what they do," Jane added.
