Instagram star quits social media to be a role model for sister
Social media star, Essena O’Neill announced that despite having more than half a million followers on Instagram, 200,000 on YouTube and 60,000 on Snapchat, she is quitting social media for good.
Don't throw the baby out of the bath water is the first thing that comes to mind when watching Essena O Neill's YouTube meltdown.
I totally agree with the point that seeking validation through social media likes, followers and numbers is dangerous and isn't a true depiction of reality.
I also agree that we should emerge ourselves in real conversations with real people and step away from our screens, something I battle with at times truth be known.
However my question is why she didn’t use her following to promote the good, real and inspiring.
Essena is a vegan and one wonders why she didn't use the platform to spread knowledge and understanding as opposed to deciding to pull down all of her accounts?
I get the fact that she felt like she was portraying false illusion but why not make a stand and for example only post pictures that are unfiltered and tampered with to spread a powerful message of what is real and not.
Quitting social media and outing the brands that have paid your salary is a bold move and it's not like she can decide in a year or two to return...
Love her guts but so wished she had used her standing to shine light as opposed to blowing out the candle.
