Dramatic footage shows Rhodes student suffer panic attack in police van
Updated | By Jane Linley-Thomas
Watching this girl so mortified in the back of a police van, and the energy around her from fellow students and even teaching staff, made my eyes wet.
A Rhodes University student suffered a panic attack inside the back of a police van following protests at the institution.
They're demanding the university take action against 11 male students who allegedly raped other students on campus, a list of the students’ names was published on social media on Sunday and protests have intensified since then.
I have never been pro the whole protesting side of things. When I see people 'wasting' precious time, when they should be at their desks learning rather being demonstrative towards each other and public property (and books!), I wonder if there is another way of skinning the cat, so to speak.
But who would ever thought young women would have to protest against rape?!
To treat people like you would like to be treated seems like such a simple mantra. Girls with the words 'this is mine' written across their bodies - such obvious yet misunderstood words. When did rape become such an ok thing to do?
Something girls blame themselves for because 'their skirts were to short,' 'she looked at him in a certain way, ‘she was asking for it,' 'she was drunk'... Rape is never ok.
