A Durban father’s worst nightmare became a reality recently when he got a call that his daughter’s drink had been spiked.

The 15-year-old had been attending an under-18 party in Umhlanga when she collapsed after taking a few sips of what she believed was a cup of cold drink.

The drink was given to her by a male partygoer before she even entered the party venue.

Her father feared she had been raped, but thankfully she was not physically harmed as one of her friends found her in time.

Just last week a friend of mine was wrestling with the idea of her 16-year-old son wanting to go to an under-18 party.

Reading this type of article makes me want to move to a farm and bolt the doors. I must admit as a youngster (and when I say youngster, I'm talking after school, not 11 years old!) I was always up for a party, but now, in hindsight, I realise what I put my parents through.

I mean the day I got my driver’s license (on the third attempt) I packed my red Chico with friends and sense of adventure and drove to Margate (in the pouring rain) for matric rave. My nerves! How did my folks do it?! I would be that mom that runs behind the car! This is pre-cellphones!

I can't imagine how stressed this dad must have been getting this type of phone call. What's also scary is kids as young as 11 years old slugging back cough syrup out of milkshake cups!

At 11 years old I was mad about beading, stickers, and Tom Cruise.

My kids are all under the age of six and, man, I wish I could keep them small forever.
