A night of incredible fashion at DUT fashion show

Wednesday night was the start of the highly anticipated annual DUT fashion show.

I must say, I can most certainly see what all the hype is about. I was literally sitting on the edge of my seat drinking it all in. The talent! Oh my word, sublime! I was utterly moved and inspired. The talent these young designers have is so fresh and out of the box. The theme this year is to unpack and explore the concept of 'After Earth'.

Under the creative direction of his awesomeness, Gideon, the show ran with slick professionalism and fashion forward execution.

I am so honored to have been asked to help 'judge' the showcase over the three nights, and in such renowned company.

First off, as a side note, I so admire and celebrate fashion icon Jackie Burger, so when I came face-to-face with her on Wednesday night, I went total 'fan girl'. It's hard not to swoon in her gracious company. It really was like meeting a family member of Iris Apfel, a lady whose bedazzled shoes I sit at.

Jackie Burger has a plethora of fashion experience, and when you are in her company, you can feel her fashion resonance. Jackie's CV would take up this page and then some, but in one line, Jackie was the editor of Elle South Africa for seven years and now owns the highly acclaimed Salon 58.

My other fellow judges are...

George Vorster is a man with a wealth of knowledge and experience in the fashion game, who has offered tutelage to names like Dion Chang, Amanda Laird Cherry, Terence Bray, and Colleen Eitzen.

Billie Zangewa is a gorgeous visual artist whose textile works have been shown around the world. She works specifically with dupion silk.

Jodie Ennik of Lampost Productions has over 20 years experience in the fashion industry and she has been involved in many amazing projects, both locally and abroad.

Last but not least, the proudly Durban brothers, The Holmes Brothers, join our bench.

Wow! What a panel!

Bring on night two, I say! If Wednesday night was anything to go by, we are going to have our work cut out for us. The standard of work is really most impressive.

I am always so proud to be a KZN girl, but last night I felt pride stir inside me that made my hair stand on end.

I love how I am moved by fashion. Visual expression ignites something very deep inside me. What a privilege to be a part of such an experience.
