This reassurance may be hard to take to heart, as South Africa is a country that is deeply religious.

Many have taken to social media to express their outrage:

The Satanic Church is based in the city of Cape Town. Co-founder of the church, Riaan Swigelaar, has been quoted as saying: “Satan to us is a symbol of pride, freedom and individualism, and it serves as a projection of our highest potential."

Riaan says he hopes to use the opening of the church as an opportunity to educate the public on satanism and the misconceptions associated with it.

Riaan added: “It’s worth clarifying that those who form part of the Satanic Church do not identify as “devil worshippers” – bare with us here: They do put their faith in Satan, but rather than seeing him as an evil figure, he’s more of a 'fitting archetype that best represents true human nature'. It’s a concept that requires some alternate thought."
